New Brunswick Parks: Irving Nature Park

Irving Nature Park is hands down one of my favorite parks in Saint John, New Brunswick. Each time I visit, I head there in the evening so I can walk along the Marsh Boardwalk to enjoy the absolutely stunning sunsets. The last time I was there, I spent two hours on the boardwalk simply sitting and taking in the breathtaking scenery. Sometimes I manage to see a few Great Blue Herons in the distance. This time around, I saw a chunky little raccoon.

However, Saint John is full of wildlife. If you visit, I promise that you’ll come across at least one deer. They’re plentiful here. I’ve even stopped for a family of skunks to cross the road. It’s a wonderland of urban animals so be mindful when driving at night. The park is also home to many of these urban animals, including red and grey squirrels, white-tailed deer, red foxes, porcupines, snowshoe hares, pine martins, and more. On the mudflats and along the Fundy shoreline, you can also find a variety of seabirds, including many migratory species.

With 600 acres of pristine urban wilderness, 7 walking and/or hiking trails, and 11 kilometers of coastline, there is something here for everyone. Whether you enjoy a leisurely walk on the family-friendly boardwalk, a hike through the forest, bike ride on the gravel road, drive along the park’s loop, or beach day at Saints Rest, you will not leave Irving Nature Park disappointed. I highly recommend bringing a camera too because it’s most likely you’ll use it.
